Transport Scotland is responsible for running the national concessionary travel scheme which has provided FREE bus travel throughout Scotland for many older and disabled people since April 2006.
Under the new scheme anyone aged sixty or over and many disabled people who live in Scotland are able to travel FREE on ANY local bus and scheduled long distance coach services in Scotland throughout the day - including the morning rush hour.
If you want to take advantage of this FREE bus travel you need to have a National Entitlement Card. This card will allow you to travel on any scheduled bus service throughout Scotland. This website contains details about the scheme and how to apply.
You can also find further information on these leaflets which can be downloaded in two colour schemes in PDF format (0.5 Mb), white text with a black background or blue text with a white background.
Young Persons' Concessionary Travel
The Scotland-Wide Concessionary Travel Scheme for Young People started on 8 January 2007. It allows all 16 - 18 year olds and young full-time volunteers up to the age of 25 concessionary travel on buses, rail and ferries throughout Scotland. The Scheme provides a third off bus and rail travel throughout Scotland. If you live on a Scottish Island, you are entitled to two free return ferry journeys to the mainland each year.
You become eligible on your 16th birthday and fall outside the scheme on your 19th birthday. Full-time volunteers (30+ hours a week) aged between 19 and 25 (up to your 26th birthday) who meet the criteria for Project Scotland are also eligible for concessionary travel scheme. You must also be resident in Scotland.
If you are still at school, your local Young Scot/Dialogue Youth Team may come in to your school over the next few months and help you apply for the card. If this is not the case or if you are not in school, or want to get one sooner, you can apply yourself.
You can obtain an application form from various locations within your Local Authority; from Transport Scotland (see website below or call 0141 272 7175); or call the Young Scot InfoLine on: 0808 801 0338 (lines open 10:00 to 18:00, Monday to Friday).
For further information on this scheme please go to http://www.givememycard.org/. Please be aware that the Scottish Youth Railcard can only be used to obtain cheaper rail travel within Scotland.
