Members of the public will have the first opportunity to see some of Glasgow’s past which has been uncovered along the route of the M74 Completion project this weekend.
A team of archaeologists have been working along the route in Glasgow to ensure that any important artefacts are protected for future generations. The Open Day will display some of the interesting finds uncovered by the archaeology work which began last month to uncover how communities and industries have changed over the years.
On Saturday, visitors to the Tenement Buildings off Devon Street, will be given a guided tour of the foundation walls of the buildings, cobbled surfaces and basements which have been uncovered.
Old maps and some of the artefacts found ranging in date from Victorian times through to the 1960’s including – complete pots from a distillery, wagon wheel, apothecary bottles, toilets to metal toys and false teeth - will be on display and archaeologists will be on hand to answer questions.
Work is continuing on site daily to look for further evidence of our ancestors with the team concentrating efforts in looking for the remains of Abbotsford Parish Church, a public house called the ‘Mill Inn’ and more tenement buildings on Devon Street, McKinley Street and Pollokshaws Road.
Ainslie McLaughlin, Director of Trunk Roads Infrastructure for Transport Scotland said:
"An important part of completing the vital link in the M74 is to carry out the necessary preparatory work which includes ensuring that the history and heritage of the site is properly recorded before construction begins. I am delighted that members of the public will have the opportunity to learn more about the lives of past generations who lived in the area."
Rusel Coleman, Project Manager for HAPCA said:
"We hope that as many people as possible take the opportunity to come along to the Open Day today. Already we are only weeks into the start of work and we have uncovered a wealth of information about the people who lived in these communities in the past.
"We will be holding more Open Days throughout the work, and I encourage everyone especially those who live and work in the area to take advantage of learning more about the area"”
