4 May 2008

The cleaning and excavation of the sub-terrain area of northern yards has begun. The overlying surfaces and tanks were removed below this appears to be a drying room. The drying room appears to have two phases to it, with an earlier drying room below the group of larger flues.

The processing of the bricks collected from site has begun this week. Individual bricks have makers stamps on them, which makes them good for dating structures. Scotland during the 19th century had a thriving brick industry, centred on the glacial clay deposits of central and south west Scotland. Unusual bricks are collected and kept for the Glasgow Museums’ brick collection.
