The new footbridge

the proposed M8 Harthill footbridge The form of the bridge has been agreed.

The main 69 metre span over the M8 is a novel structure, comprising a helical lattice truss formed from tubular steel.  It supports a fully enclosed glazed walkway.

The form and layout of the new bridge has been chosen by Transport Scotland following a comprehensive study. Refurbishment of the existing bridge was discounted as it would not have provided value for money nor enhanced the development.

Several forms were considered and evaluated for the new structure, including a tied arch structure and a cable stayed bridge.  It was agreed that the helical truss form offered the best value for money and provided a suitably impressive solution.
