Dig Diary Week 7 (19 Nov - 23 Nov 2007)

The three buildings in the southern range of the Lower English Buildings had several phases of development. The initial structures appear to have been single storey cottages with four units per building with two rooms per unit.

Evidence of possible post pads for staircases have been uncovered, which would indicate the addition of a second storey at some stage. These appear to be contemporary with the remains of paved internal floors that overlay earlier raised wooden floors.

Further excavation of the cobbled surfaces has found evidence for postholes, probably for timber frames. These may have been stables or auxiliary buildings.
