Can you help make history? Until Spring 2009.
You could do so by contributing to the oral history project being run in conjunction with the M74 dig. Oral history is the recording of people’s memories and life experiences. Such memories and experiences are unique and offer an invaluable insight into past processes. If you, or a relative or friend, have lived, worked or have a good knowledge of: Govan Iron Works (Dixon’s Blazes); Caledonian Pottery, Rutherglen; Tenement buildings at Pollokshaws Road/McKinley Street/Devon Street; then we would be delighted to hear from you. Please contact our Oral Historian, David Walker in the first instance on: 0141 418 2842 or email david@m74dig.org.uk

Alternatively, you can access the Oral History Project sign up form.

Visit M74 Archaeological Archive. Until Spring 2009.

The M74 Archaeological Archive offers an opportunity to handle finds from the M74 archaeological investigations, as well as to consult reports, maps, plans, old archive photographs and reference books on the history of the area surrounding the route of the M74 motorway. This is a unique and unusual opportunity to see behind the scenes of an archaeological dig as this type of material is rarely easily accessible to the public. A sample of the M74 archive is held on open access shelves to the public. The archive is a learning resource for any members of the public visiting the museum who might be interested in finding out more about the archaeology and history of the surrounding area along the route of the M74, near to which is closely situated Scotland Street School Museum. It is also a useful resource for students, local history and archaeology societies. Until Spring 2009 at the M74 Dig Discovery Centre, Scotland Street School Museum in the Drill Hall.

Events, talks and training
A conference on the results of excavations on the main archaeological sites will be held on September 20th 2008 as part of Scottish Archaeology Month at the M74 Dig Discovery Centre. More details shortly.

Archaeological Master Classes Nov-Dec 2008

Archaeological Activities
During the 2008 Spring holidays, over 200 children accompanied by adults took part in archaeological activities or used our child-friendly simulated archaeological dig at the M74 Dig Discovery Centre at Scotland Street School Museum. The simulated dig is an imitation archaeological dig where children can explore what it is like to be an archaeologist and handle real artefacts found in the M74 Dig. Supervised sessions are open during holiday periods to families and children accompanied by adults.

For more information, telephone 0141 418 2840.

Schools Outreach Programme. Until Spring 2009.

Over 1100 schoolchildren from 5 primary schools along the route of the M74 have so far taken part in the Schools Outreach Programme. Each school learned about archaeology and what archaeologists do, and what M74 Dig archaeologists have been doing in their area. An interactive handling session used as Primary Sources, original material from the M74 Dig. Secondary sources include maps and sections of old maps of Govan Iron Works, the tenements at MacKinlay Street, and the Caledonian Pottery as well as archive photographs.
