One of the biggest civil engineering operations in Scotland is taking place in Glasgow over the next two weeks.

The launch of the Port Eglinton Viaduct is part of the work going on to complete the missing link between the end of the existing M74 at Fullarton Road and the M8 south of the Kingston Bridge.

The scheme involves a number of crossings of roads, railways and the River Clyde. The Port Eglinton viaduct, 750 metres long, is the largest of 13 structures along the route of the motorway.

Construction continues apace with bridge beams in place at Glasgow Road

Progress continues on the M74 Completion project with the successful erection of beams at Glasgow Road underbridge. The operation took place over two weekends in October and November using a crane to place the 39 precast concrete beams onto the structure. Placed end to end, the beams used to construct the bridge would fit down both sides of Rutherglen Main Street.

M74 Completion sets apprentices on the road to career success

Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson welcomed fifteen young people on the road to career success today as they were formally inducted to an M74 Modern Apprenticeship scheme.

The apprentices, who are mainly from the Glasgow and South Lanarkshire area, started working on the project last year as a result of the M74 Employability Partnership. They will now have the opportunity to maximise the benefits of this work experience as they start out on the Interlink M74 JV led Modern Apprenticeship scheme that allows them to become 'time-served' within two years.

Interlink M74, the joint venture working on the M74 Completion Project, will be undertaking works to install beams to carry the new motorway over the Glasgow Road during the next two weekends.

Temporary closure of the Glasgow Road between Potters Way and Southcroft Road will be required whilst the installation is undertaken on Saturday night to Monday morning on the 31st October to 2nd November and 7th to 9th November.

The works will create the following road closures and detours from 7pm Saturday evenings to 6am Monday mornings on both weekends:

M74 completion creates new from old

The old carriageway of the existing M74 motorway is being recycled in the construction of the new M74 Completion.

The M74 Completion project is committed to the reuse and recycling of aggregate material wherever possible. The most recent initiatives have seen the reuse of 65,000 tonnes of material resulting in a CO2 reduction of 118,000 tonnes, equivalent to the daily output of over 113,300 people - nearly twice the combined population of Rutherlgen and Cambulsang through which the route passes.

Primary 4/5 pupils from Cairns Primary School in Cambuslang paid a visit to the site of Transport Scotland's M74 Completion project this week as part of a unique project facilitated by contractor Interlink M74 JV and Clyde Gateway. The children will be following the progress of the construction of Auchenshuggle Bridge over the River Clyde near Rutherglen over the course of two years culminating in the creation of literature and an exhibition for their local community.
