1 A trunk road is a major road, usually connecting one or more cities, ports, airports, etc. which is the recommended route for long-distance and freight traffic. Many trunk roads have segregated lanes, or are motorway standard.
2 The locations of the projects is divided into four areas: North East; North West; South East and South West. These are based around trunk road locations and each of these is managed and maintained by a separate contract, see Operating Companies.
