Completion of the M8 between Edinburgh and Glasgow by providing a new section of motorway between the M73 at Baillieston and the A73 at Newhouse

What's involved?

  • Completion of the M8 between Edinburgh and Glasgow by providing a new section of motorway between the M73 at Baillieston and the A73 at Newhouse
  • Motorway is initially an extension of the dual two-lane motorway from Edinburgh, widening to dual three-lane at Chapelhall Junction where the flows from the proposed Ravenscraig and Newhouse developments would join the motorway
  • Widening again with the addition of an auxiliary lane in each direction between Eurocentral and Shawhead junctions to cater for the weaving traffic between these two junctions and the traffic from the Eurocentral development

Project benefits
This project will reduce delays to through traffic using the A8/M8 and for local traffic attempting to use the junctions with the A8

Status
This project is at the proposal stage.  There is currently an ongoing public information exercise where brochures have been issued to 25,000 homes in the study corridor.  This brochure is available at the project website.

Impact on travel
Improved journey times, more reliable journey times and improved safety.

Traffic management
This is unknown at this stage but it is likely to be complex in the Shawhead area.

Environmental impact
The assessment into the environmental impact of this project is being finalised.  It is likely to have some impact on Sites of Importance to Nature Conservation (also known as SINCs) and also have some impact on the general landscape.
