Scottish Green Bus Fund - Background

The aim of the Scottish Green Bus Fund is to help support and hasten the introduction of new low carbon buses across Scotland.
 
Support for the fund has sen seventy new low carbon buses introduced into the Scottish Bus Fleet between July 2011 and March 2013 as a result of a grant offered under rounds 1 and 2 of the fund. A further 24 low carbon buses purchased under round 3 are expected to join the Scottish fleet by 31 March 2014.

Background

  • The Scottish Green Bus Fund rounds 1, 2 and 3 were officially launched on 5 July 2010, 17 January 2012 and 1 October 2012 respectively.
  • The Scottish Green Bus Fund operated as a Challenge Fund with fixed budget of £4.4 million for the first round in the financial year 2010-2011. £2m for the second round in 2011-2012 and £3m for round 3 in 2013. The fund currently offers successful bidders up to 80% of the price differential between an LCV and its diesal equivalent.  
  • EU State Aid approval was granted for each round of the scheme
  • Bids were invited from: Bus Operators, Local Authorities (LAs), Regional Transport Partnerships (RTPs) and Companies leasing/renting LCVs to the above bodies in Scotland.
