New stations

During the 1980s and into the 1990s a large number of new stations were opened, some on new lines. Most of these were on the suburban networks around Edinburgh and Glasgow, but the range includes from Gretna in the south to Dunrobin Castle in the north.

These new stations have filled many gaps in the network and there is now limited scope for a major programme of station reopening on existing lines.  Extra stations will slow down the existing trains and thus result in uncompetitive journey times.

New station opportunities are now more likely to reflect changes in land use, such as the opening of Edinburgh Park station to serve the growing business area in West Edinburgh.  They also reflect changes in journey patterns, such as commuters from Beauly travelling into Inverness.
