The West of Scotland railway investment brings together three projects and a new passenger service timetable which will deliver real improvements to passenger rail services between Glasgow, Paisley, Ayrshire and Inverclyde.
- Infrastructure improvements (Paisley Corridor Improvements)
The Paisley Corridor Improvements project is being delivered by Network Rail in partnership with Transport Scotland and the rail industry and demonstrates the Scottish Government’s continuing commitment to continually improving rail passenger services in the West of Scotland.
- Rolling Stock Procurement
The demand for growth and the aspirations contained within Scotland’s Railways have resulted in a Rolling Stock Procurement Programme to procure and commission the additional trains required for Ayrshire, Inverclyde and North Berwick. The new Class 380 trains (38 units) have been procured from Siemens and are a mix of 3 (22) and 4 (16) carriages long with a vehicle length of 23m. This train replaces a fleet of 3 car units with a length of 20m.
- Infrastructure improvements (Platform extensions, enhanced train maintenance depot and enhanced stabling facilities)
As a result of the introduction of the new Class 380 trains specific infrastructure improvements have been required. These improvements include making the existing platforms longer, at 27 stations, and providing other related enhancements (e.g. relocating the Overhead Line Electrification, installing/relocating signalling and relocating/providing platform based furniture to allow the new Class 380 trains to operate on the routes).
In addition there has been a requirement to make changes to where the new Class 380 trains are maintained and stabled (parked) when not in use which has resulted in improvements in the maintenance and train stabling facilities at Shields, Ayr, Townhead, Yoker and Cokerhill depots.
The investment programme will be delivered by a partnership of Transport Scotland, Network Rail and First ScotRail.
