M74 Raith Interchange
Raith Junction is a roundabout linking the M74 motorway with the A725 Bellshill Bypass and East Kilbride Expressway.
Background
The M74 links the Glasgow area with South West Scotland as far as Gretna. The M74 also links to the M8 at Baillieston via one mile of the M73. The Raith Junction provides one of the key connections on the M74 to the south east of Glasgow and requires to carry a high volume of traffic.
The improvement works at this junction, which form part of the M8 M73 M74 Motorway Improvements project, will provide a free flow link for traffic between the Bellshill Bypass and the East Kilbride Expressway, separating it from the A725 traffic using the M74. The free flow link will be provided by means of an underpass below the existing roundabout and M74, which will release additional traffic flow capacity on the roundabout.
The works at Raith will also provide a new cycleway/walkway between Bothwell and Strathclyde Country Park providing much improved accessibility. The new cycleway/walkway will be fully compliant with the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act 2005 and includes a bridges to cross the existing roundabout, thereby improving safety by segregating pedestrians and cyclists from motorists through the majority of its route.
